Not many people are expecting the jays to win a championship. But after years of building and drafting high and patiently building, (frank) yeah trade the prospects and make a run for a couple of years. Baseball isnt a salary cap league, how could they go the same route as the leafs? If they don't have any post season success, rogers will never open the wallet and they can have fun building their team from the draft for the next 30 years.

Point being, baseball isn't hockey, jays arent the leafs

Draft picks and prospects in baseball are a completely different thing then draft picks and prospects in hockey.

agreed.

the mistake was giving up picks for guys like Wesley ... not Nolan.

and the BIG mistake was giving Donald Trump HUUUUUUGE contracts to above avg players like McCabe, Kaberle, Tucker Domi... with NTC/NMC... that screwed the Leafs.

Jays should go for it if they are close... then decide when to start rebuild whether that be next year or the year after

no problem... give him a pyramid and a paper bag.

people/leaf fans in the last 15 years really have NO clue how nuts the Ballard years were.

i) who in their right mind trades an all-star right winger who's 25 years old ... because you're pissed off with his friend asking for a bigger contract?
ii) who hires a senile coach to come back and actually be a GM...
iii) who trades your Captain, all-star leader for nothing?

the Kessel trade by camparison was excellent.

For 20 years after winning the WS, which they did with the highest payroll in MLB at the time, the Jays would draft, trade away, repeat for (frank) all.

Last year was great. This year they may repeat that success by trading away assets. So who gives a (frank) if they go all in. It's not like drafting and developing helped them anyway..

so easy in baseball to restock the cupboards. You get free picks from the supplemental draft for losing guys who had a good yr and left through free agency. A zillion rounds to the draft. Piles of imports from Japan and then all the latin/cuba dudes. Vladimir Guerrero Jr signed when he was 16 for like 3.5 mill. You can just buy players

Interesting comparison , but the leafs contrary to the blue jays had to deal with a tight salary cap following the next season. If the lock out ended and there was no salary cap implemented , Toronto would of probably kept over paying veterans and running a massive payroll. I do recall an amazing collection of players being available at the time via FA.

I think the right play for the jays is to trade away Bautista for a pile and let Upton take his spot in the field moving forward. It is not likely we are going to sign both Bautista and Encarnacion moving forward so a decision has to made about which one you want going forward, I would prefer Edwin so trade Jose and get as big of a haul as you can.

Re-Sign Saunders and go with Saunders, Pillar and Upton in the outfield plus whatever haul we can get from Jose, maybe some prospects to put in the cupboard and maybe some pitching to help right now.

No salary cap in baseball. Different player contract system. ELC's and rule changes in hockey make young players WAY more valuable now than before the changes. Leafs happened to have been a contender leading up to the lockout that changed it all. So they were right to make those moves.

Even in today's ELC environment top teams are regularly trading 1st and 2nd round picks to beef up for a cup run. I mean Chicago traded a 1st a few years back for Atoine Vermette. Nashville traded a 1st to Toronto for Franson and (Santorelli??).

Yes exactly. It was a consistent strategy for the Leafs pre ELC era. And that strategy allowed them to be a contender most years - but never really a cup favorite.

Maybe the Jays should sign up Colton Orr and Frazer McLaren for some baseballing. Those guys got us into the playoffs. Sundin baseballed

Nope. Like has been said...baseball is different especially when it comes to the picks and prospects.

And frankly the Jays are doing what they should be. They have a window to be pushing for playoff runs and a championship. Adding what pieces you can to try and get there is the next step for them.

Martin isnt coming here to protect Holland and Greening.

I see Martin playing up a line. Keep hearing he has more potential than just a 4th liner. And not sure who mentioned a knock on his skating in the last thread but from what I've seen it's fine...really good in fact. He isn't #1 in hits because he's slow.
